Aspiring preschool teachers get hands-on experience

High school seniors who are interested in teaching young children recently got an interactive opportunity at the Medina County Career Center in Medina.

Three- and four-year-old children in the center's preschool were enjoying circus week at the center under the eyes of the seniors, who in turn were supervised by Carla Keller, the preschool coordinator. She is accompanied by several teacher aides, who are all adults.

Keller and the juniors in the program work together on the morning session at the preschool, where Keller helps them learn. The seniors run the school in the afternoon. Currently there are 15 students going through the program, according to Keller. Some want to become preschool teachers, while others opt to go to college to become pediatric nurses or elementary school teachers. They learn how to devise lesson plans, discover how children develop, get advice on managing a classroom on a day-to-day basis, and find out what levels of development are appropriate in a preschool setting.

The preschool earned a rating of four stars from the Ohio Department of Education, the first such school in Medina County to win this honor.

Keller and other school officials might consider creating colorful Brochures that describe the preschool and its programs, and making them available to parents in the area, as well as selected high schools.
