Another victory for Boatily Floatily

Boatily Floatily, the defending champion of Medina High’s Junk Boat Float, won the sixth annual contest recently.

As the name implies, the boats in the race are made of junk, usually things like water bottles, though worn out kiddie pools have been used. Duct Tape appears to be the fastening of choice.

The event started six years ago, when Jessica Niemantsverdriet (known as ‘Mrs. Nemo’) and Laura Frawley, who teach environmental science and biology, decided to find an amusing way to teach their students about their fields, and in particular, to raise their awareness of the importance of conservation, and the problems posed by water pollution.

The duo also had the help of Nelson and Sharon Schorr, and Andy Krejci. Sharon Schorr teaches Spanish, and Andy Krejci is a physics instructor. Also in the mix is Longhorn Steakhouse, which gives participants a hot dog and hamburger lunch.

This year, there were 28 boats in the race, but Boatily Floatily, which was designed and crewed by Jake Wickert, Zach Robertson, and Nolan Andrasik, all Medina High seniors, triumphed again.

In addition to educating people, the event is a fundraiser for public restrooms in Medina, and for city schools' filling stations for water bottles.

Outdoor events like this can be even more fun if organizers decorate the venue with colorful Banners, which are sturdy enough to be used outside.
