Nelly (Cornell Iral Haynes Jr.) is a native of Austin, Texas, who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He and his friends formed a group called the St. Lunatics while they were still in high school, and were moderately popular in the local area, but had trouble winning recognition outside St. Louis. However, they generated enough buzz for the Universal Music Group to sign Nelly to the label as a solo artist.
Under the guidance of the label, Nelly broke through in 2000 with “Country Grammar,” his debut album. The title track hit No. 1 on the Hot Rap Tracks and No. 7 on the Hot 100, and the success of the single propelled the album to its debut at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart. The RIAA certified the album 9X Platinum.
“Nellyville,” the artist’s second album, dropped in 2002 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Music Albums chart. In 2003, the single “Hot in Herre” won the Grammy for “Best Male Rap Solo Performance.” His most recent release is the 2021 album “Heartland.”
A review says simply:
“Nelly steals the show . . .”
