Kettering tucks in for a purpose

A fundraiser is coming up to help support a local organization.

Kettering Backpack is the host of the Flapjack Fundraiser, which will be held at a local Applebee’s. The “Short Stacks for a Tall Cause” event will raise money to support the backpack program. The fee is $10 per person, which includes two slices of bacon, three pancakes, butter, syrup, and a drink of the person’s choice, with options including milk, orange juice, tea, soda, or coffee. No substitutions will be allowed to the menu, but people can eat as many pancakes as they like, and beverage refills are free.

The Kettering Backpack Program is a non-profit organization that was started in 2006. The program’s goal is to fight hunger in 16 of Kettering’s middle and elementary schools every week. Every Friday, the Backpack Program provides a bag of food to at-risk students during the school year. The packs are distributed discretely, and help meet the nutritional needs of the students during the weekends, when school-supplied lunches and breakfasts are not available.

The program started with only 15 students, and is now feeding almost 600 students weekly. The effort can continue only with the assistance of community partners, volunteers, and citizens who attend events like this one.

The fundraiser will be held January 14, from 8:00 am until 10:00 am, at Applebee’s Delco Park, located on Delco Park Drive. Organizers of events like these can use flyer printing to create handouts to advertise in the local area.
