Ohio’s brickmaking history will be given a platform in Athens this autumn, with event attendees getting the chance to design and create their own unique brick.
Carve Your Story: A Hands-On Brickmaking Experience, which is being put together by Appalachian Understories, is coming to Ohio to give Athens residents a closer look at the town and region’s history through a hands-on learning experience. The program is part of Ohio Country 1776, which hopes to build an appreciation for history through the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Participants will learn how to sketch and carve a customized brick and learn more about what can be learned from old bricks in town. Local experts Tyler Hampton and Ed Newman will lead the historical workshop while talking about the communities and industries that are the foundation of Ohio’s brickmaking past. Organizers can use brochure printing to provide handy educational materials that provide more in-depth information to attendees for a positive visit.
The bricks will be fired when the designs are complete, and participants can pick them up to take home after the event. Visitors are also encouraged to check out The Early Industry exhibition of historic bricks.
The Southeast Ohio History Center, located in Athens, is set to host the brickmaking experience on Saturday, October 24th, starting at 2:00pm. Interested individuals can make reservations for free online.
