Women of honor named near Williston Park

A group of 18 women from the town of North Hempstead, near Williston Park, were added to the May W. Newburger Women's Honor Roll this year.

The women were recognized because of what they have given to their communities and the town overall. Those named to this year's honor roll are part of a tradition that dates back to 1994, when the honor roll was established. The town can use a local Print company to create packets of information on the women and to spread the word about the annual breakfast, during which each will be officially recognized.

The Women's Honor Roll is named after the first woman to serve as the town supervisor in the history of North Hempstead. May W. Newburger was the supervisor from 1994 until 2003. Before that, she served on the town council and gave eight years’ service in the New York State Assembly.

A past honoree, Shirley Romaine, is scheduled to speak at the breakfast. Romaine is a peace and arts activist in the area and was one of the first women recognized by the honor roll.

Although the breakfast is free, reservations are required. People can reserve a spot at the event by contacting the office of Wayne Wink, the Town Clerk. It will start at 8:00 am and take place in Port Washington, at the Clubhouse at Harbor Links.
