What's Happening in Williston Park, NY…

This year, more seniors attending East Williston School District, which serves students in the Williston Park area, were accepted to college than in years past.

The college acceptance rate climbed by 5 percent in 2015 compared to 2014, although students applied to fewer colleges. This year, seniors at the Wheatley, the district's lone high school, submitted 1,231 applications to colleges or universities. They received acceptances from 935 of them. In 2014, there were 1,502 applications, but only 1,067 acceptances.

Although the number of applications per student was lower this year, just 7.7 compared to 8.9 in 2014, the median acceptance rate was up to 86 percent, compared to 2014's 75 percent. In all, the acceptance rate at the school was 76 percent for the year. The school can use banner printing to highlight the accomplishments and bright futures of this year's graduating class.

The school also had a decent showing in terms of the number of students accepted to Ivy League colleges. There 64 applications sent to Ivy League schools and a total of 10 accepted. Four student got into the University of Pennsylvania, five into Cornell, and one into Dartmouth.

District officials created a PowerPoint presentation comparing the Wheatley acceptance rates to that of a neighboring, unnamed school. Students from both schools applied to 160 colleges and The Wheatley School's acceptance rate was higher at 123 of the shared schools.
