Williston Park dog owners now allow to walk their pets in public

The Town of North Hempstead, which includes Williston Park, recently voted to allow dog owners to walk their pets in public parks.

The vote came six months after a trial program began, during which people were allowed to bring their canine companions to three parks in the town. The unanimous vote means that the pets-allowed program has been permanently extended.

On-leash dogs are now allowed at North Hempstead Beach Park, Mary Jane Davies Green, and Michael J. Tully Park. The town can use printing companies to produce Signs to let pet owners know that their dogs are welcome in the parks, and to let the owners know of any rules involved in bringing a pet into the park.

Speaking to the Island Now, Judi Bosworth, the town supervisor, stated:

"We want all of our dog owners to have the ability to have a park in North Hempstead that they can bring their dogs."

Before voting to extend the program, the town had an online survey up for two months. Residents were able to provide feedback and opinions about the program, and according to Jill Weber, the parks commissioner, comments were mostly positive.

There is some concern among residents about others violating the rules, by letting their pets off-leash or by not picking up after their dogs. The town does monitor the parks and is continuing to look for ways to improve the program and to limit violations.
