What's Happening in Williston Park, NY…

Breast cancer awareness efforts typically include walks and pink ribbons. However, for the past four years, the Adelphi Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, based in Garden City, near Williston Park, has come up with a slightly more creative way to raise awareness of – and funding for – breast cancer research.

The program hosts Creative Cups, a bra decorating project. The goal of the project is to use creativity to honor and celebrate the lives of people who have struggled with or survived breast cancer. The organizers of the project can use printing companies to get the word out that it is accepting submissions, and to provide people with a list of guidelines.

Those who wish to participate should purchase a plain, padded underwire bra in a size 36C. Purchasing the right bra is important, as all submissions will be displayed on mannequins. All areas of the bra – front, back, straps, and sides – need to be covered with decorations. Each submission should include a paragraph describing the inspiration for the design.

Although the deadline for submissions is October 15th, only the first 200 bras registered online will be accepted. The sooner people register, the more likely it is that they'll be accepted. Registration is open now and the fee is $25 per bra.

Each submission will be on display during the Creative Cups reception and auction at Adelphi University in March next year.
