Judi Bosworth, the Supervisor of Hempstead Town, recently revealed the features that will be included in the renovation of the 90-acre former Bar Beach site. Plans for the new park have been in work for two years.
According to Supervisor Bosworth, visitors to the park, which is only a short journey from Williston Park, will be able to take part in a variety of activities, including playing chess, enjoying a water playground, walking the dog, riding a motocross track, eating at an outdoor café, snoozing in a hammock, and kayaking. Facilities like this can be more easily enjoyed if officials use poster printing to help people find their way around.
Bosworth said the park's plan is ‘transformative’, featuring the amenities mentioned, plus a restaurant that will be open all year long. Officials are also considering saving part of the park to create a memorial to honor the memory of residents of North Hempstead who were lost on 9/11.
The planning process dates back to early 2017, when officials visited the communities that make up the Town of Hempstead, asking for residents' ideas about redoing the park. Some of the suggestions were wind turbines, an archery range, and even a race course for drones. Hempstead hired Quennell Rothschild & Partners, an architectural firm based in Manhattan, to collate these ideas and come up with a master plan for revamping the park.
