Two young women, one from Williston Park and the other from East Williston, recently achieved the top Girl Scout honor in the form of the Girl Scout Gold Award.
The award brings with it the chance for scholarships and other recognitions. Young women who join the armed forces are given an elevated rank if they receive the Gold Award.
The two Scouts, Emma Parente, who is about to enter her junior year at Kellenberg Memorial High School, and Erin Beatty, who recently graduated from Mineola High School, worked on Take Action projects to receive the awards. The local Girl Scouts chapter could use Stationery printers to recognize their achievements.
Take Action projects are designed to make a sustainable difference in a young woman's community. More than 80 hours of service are required for the projects. Along with completing a Take Action project, Gold Award recipients need to complete at least two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journeys, and be in high school at the time of the project. Only about 5% of Girl Scouts qualify for the award across the U.S.
Parente's project allowed the student to celebrate her love of dance and share it with others, specifically special needs children. She also researched dance therapy. Beatty's project focused on teaching people about the importance of nutrition, exercise, and sleep.
