Schools near Williston Park recognized for music education programs

Five school districts in the North Shore area, which includes Williston Park, were named as ‘Best Communities for Music Education’ by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation (NAMMF) at the end of March.

The chosen districts include Great Neck, Port Washington, Mineola, Manhasset, and Herricks. The schools from Long Island were among 471 others from across the US.

Earning a Best Community for Music Education recognition means that the school districts put forth great efforts on the part of students, teachers, parents, and administrators to make sure that there is access to music education for every student in the schools’ curriculum. The schools could use Stationery printing to show the fact that they earned the NAMMF's recognition.

Many of the school districts are no strangers to the award. For example, the Great Neck district has been recognized 10 times since the program began in 1999. Over all, the district has 24 certified music teachers.

The Mineola district has earned eight recognitions so far. Joseph Owens, the district supervisor of fine and performing arts, remarked:

“Receiving this award for eight consecutive years is a true testament to our community’s belief in a well-rounded education for all students."

This is the second year Port Washington has earned the award from the NAMMF, which director of creative arts Kevin Scully said reflected both the efforts of teachers and students, and the support from the community.
