State education officials have released data that shows what the graduation rates were in different counties across New York State.
Nassau County was given a graduation rate of close to 93% for June and August 2021 with a total of 15,385 graduates, which puts it near the top. This means that students in towns such as Williston Park are doing particularly well. Bayport-Blue Point had the highest graduation rate of 96%, although it had a much smaller sample size with 193 graduates in total.
The proportion of Nassau County students who were awarded with advanced diplomas given to students who complete the more challenging courses such as geometry and physics was 65%. Figures for the number of students who complete advanced courses have been rising slowly but steadily over the past 10 years, even in the pandemic years – the sort of statistic that colleges and universities often promote through brochure printing.
The state’s average graduation rate was 86%, which is a modest improvement on the previous year. Officials pointed out that there were a large number of exemptions from Regents examinations due to pandemic-related issues and this may have skewed the results a little.
The study also showed that, on average, female students were slightly more likely to graduate than males were, and economically disadvantaged students were 25% less likely to graduate than their non-economically disadvantaged classmates.
