The Hamptons Observatory, in collaboration with Guild Hall, will offer a virtual poetry reading next month. Anyone from Long Island is welcome to join, including those living in Williston Park.
The reading will feature poetry themed around the sky, with selections organizers describe as “eloquent” and “sometimes humorous.” Some of the poems included are Elizabeth Alexander’s “Apollo,” Patricia Smith’s “Annie Pearl Smith Discovers Moonlight,” and Jessica Goodfellow’s “Three Views of Mars.” A group of actors will recite the poetry, and visual components will accompany their readings.
Leading the event is Dava Sobel, a writer and editor situated in the New York area. Previously working as a reporter for the New York Times, Sobel is now the poetry editor for Scientific America. Sobel will provide context for the poetry reading by discussing how the sky has acted as inspiration for poets throughout the ages.
The observatory will continue to host other events and exhibits throughout the year. These activities are often promoted with the help of Print shops, and anyone interested can keep a lookout for them.
The reading is set to take place on Wednesday, April 7 at 7:00 PM. Registration for the event is free, but participants can choose to leave a donation. A link to the event will be sent to each registrant a day before it will take place.
