New season begins for Band of Long Island

The Band of Long Island is getting ready to open its season, and will be performing in the Williston Park area.

Michael Flamhaft will be on the podium for the opening of the Band of Long Island's eight season. The program is wide-ranging, featuring classics by Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovitch, Elgar, and Filmore, as well as Broadway offerings from “Into the Woods” by Sondheim, and “West Side Story,” by Leonard Bernstein. The venue is a short drive from Williston Park, and poster printing is often used to advertise events like this in the local area.

James Decker, 14, a Chaminade High School student, will be a featured performer, playing a solo on the French horn in “Morceau de Concert” by Camille Saint-Saëns. Decker will receive the first Band of Long Island Scholarship Award. The award gives an outstanding music student a change to perform in a venue other than one related to their school. It also carries a cash prize of $250, which the winner can use to continue their study of music.

The opening concert of the season is set for 2:00 pm this Sunday, October 27, at the Landmark on Main Street, located in Port Washington. Tickets are $20 for general admission, with a student and senior rate of $15. Children eight and under will be admitted free, if they are accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
