The funds for the grant will be sourced from federal monies put aside for the American Rescue and Recovery Act (ARPA).
The new program is designed specifically for veterans’ halls and facilities that were unable to rent out their facilities for private and catered events as they normally would have due to COVID-19 restrictions. Veterans' halls all over Nassau County, including places like Williston Park, will be eligible for access to the grant money.
Bruce Blakeman, Nassau’s County Executive, said:
"There’s a warm place in my heart for veterans and there should be for every resident of Nassau County because of the service they've given to our country. With the approval of the legislature, we are going to provide $10,000 as a grant."
Initially, veterans’ group were not eligible to receive funds from the ARPA, but the legislative majority along with Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello, having listened to the concerns of veterans’ groups, pushed to have veterans’ organizations such as American Legion and AMVETS included in the same acceptance criteria as other non-profits and businesses in the county.
