Mineola scholars make science semis

Two seniors at Mineola High School, near Williston Park, have found that great ideas and talent can help them rise to the top.

Charlotte Ring and Monika Dharia were among the 43 students from Long Island named as semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search on January 7.

Ring and Dharia, along with the other 298 semifinalists around the U.S., were selected from a total of 1,800 students from a total of 41 states. They will compete with each other in the search's finals and three will be chosen to take home first place prizes of $150,000.

According to the Mineola High School principal Edward Escobar, the school has been participating in the Intel competition for five years and it has become increasingly popular. To promote to even more students in future years, the school could use brochure printers to highlight past winners and semifinalists and draw greater attention to the competition.

Both Dharia and Ring received $1,000 for making it to the semi-finals. They will find out if their projects got the to the finals on January 21. If they are finalists, they will be sent to Washington, DC, on an all-expenses paid trip in early March.

Whether they make it to the finals or not, both girls have expressed their delight in making it this far in the competition.
