High school senior near Williston Park has pick of top schools

Some high school students worry that they will not be accepted at any of the schools they apply to, but Harold Ekeh, a senior at Elmont Memorial High School near Williston Park, will have no concerns about that or having to settle for any “safety” schools.

Ekeh applied to, and was accepted at, all of the eight schools in the Ivy League. In addition to this, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and four other colleges also said yes to his application. All 13 of the schools he applied to returned acceptance letters to him.

Elmont High can use Stationery printers to create a certificate to honor Ekeh. Those at the school, including John Capozzi, the principal, are proud of the student's efforts. Capozzi told the New Hyde Park Herald Courier that Ekeh’s determination is a particular asset that has helped him achieve highly.

Although he has not yet decided which school to go to, Ekeh plans on studying neurobiology and biochemistry once he gets there. A topic that interests him is finding a way to prevent Alzheimer's, a disease his grandmother was diagnosed with. He has already started research on the topic. In January of this year, his project titled ‘The role of PARP-1 in MeHg-induced dopaminergic dysfunction and mitochondrial DNA depletion’, was a semi-finalist in the Intel STS competition.
