An example of helping others succeed beyond anyone's expectations was achieved recently, thanks to members of the Marine Corps League Detachment 614 of New Hyde-Park and Port Washington and of the Williston Park American Legion Post 144.
Organizers from the two groups got together to put together a fundraiser for the Semper Fi Fund, which provides support to veterans with disabilities.
At a dinner on the first Saturday in October, the organizations managed to raise $15,000 for the fund. The dinner was held in Williston Park, at the Legion post. The success of this year's event has organizers planning for next year already. When the time comes, they can use a local printing company to help them get the word out.
About 190 veterans, plus their friends and family members, came out for the dinner. The food was donated by Dominick Grosso, a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 614 and the owner of Dom's Italian American Deli in New Hyde Park. Those who attended the meal paid $40 to get in.
In addition to raising funds through donated meals, the event also pulled in money from a silent auction. Items up for sale included baseball tickets to see the Mets, tickets to see the Brooklyn Nets, and a John Starks jersey, courtesy of the New York Knicks.
