Fifth graders ask congressman the tough questions

US House of Representatives member Steve Israel, of the 3rd district of New York, was grilled by a group of young students when he made an appearance at a local school last month.

Israel spoke to a group of fifth grade students at Munsey Park Elementary School, in Manhasset, near Williston Park. The representative visited the school after the students wrote him letters. As a way to thank the representative for visiting them, the class can use Stationery printers to send out another letter.

While there, he shed a light on his reasons for going into government, and what his favorite part of the job is. He told the students that solving problems was the thing he enjoyed most about the job and that he relished the opportunity to interact with the kids and to learn from them.

Questions from the students ran the gamut. One asked about his favorite television shows while another asked about his favorite president. The representative told the students that he enjoys History Channel programming, as well as reality shows such as ‘Storage Wars’.

According to fifth grade teacher Michael Putnam, the students were thrilled to meet the representative and were happy that he answered their questions. Putnam added that he thought his students learned a lot from the visit and that it let them see inside the workings of government.
