Westbury Arts together with EastLine Theatre is presenting Nilo Cruz's Anna in the Tropics to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Nilo Cruz is a Pulitzer Prize winner and Anna in the Tropics is set in 1928 in Tampa. It follows the story of a Cuban-American cigar factory where the cigars are hand rolled and special lectors are hired to entertain the workers. A new lector starts to read to the workers from Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina.” Hearing these stories about the American Dream serves as a catalyst that changes the lives of some of the readers.
This particular production is one of the shows to be produced thanks to EastLine’s Theatre for All Initiative. EastLine Theatre operates as a non-profit company once referred to by BroadwayWorld as “Long Island’s best-kept secret.” The company’s goal is to provide theatrical shows in unlikely spaces. It also intends to bring a mixture of canon, modern plays, and original works to local communities. Poster printing is commonly used to promote theatrical shows.
Tickets can be reserved for $20 and the reservation will be refunded in full at the end of the performance. All attendees are required to arrive at the theatre fifteen minutes before the performance starts or their ticket reservations will be given to someone else on the waiting list.
The show is suitable for children as young as 13 and will be on at Westbury Arts Council, a few miles west of Williston Park, from September 10 to October 2.
