County proposes 2024 budget

Bruce Blakeman, the executive of Nassau County, has presented a budget proposal worth $4.1bn for 2024.

This budget includes allowances for the creation of 50 new posts, including 20 new police officers, and represents a significant increase on the previous year's spending, totaling another $180 million in county spending.

With no suggested increases or decreases, this budget plan keeps real estate taxes and the majority of county fees fixed at their current levels. The 7,463 new positions covered by the budget allocation—an increase of 50 posts over the year before—are employed by the county administration.

Officials from the county have defended this hike by pointing out that strengthening public safety staff will help cut down on unnecessary overtime costs. In a letter included with the budget request, Blakeman pledged to use more money to deal with persistent county problems. Ongoing labor conflicts, a growing backlog of uncollected property tax refunds, and support for the funding of new labor agreements are a few examples of these.

A new deal with the Civil Service Employees Association, the county's main employee union, is anticipated to be approved by the Nassau Legislature.
