Community center earns grant for special needs

The Sid Jacobson JCC in East Hills near Williston Park has secured a $35,000 grant aimed at compensating adults with special needs while they acquire essential workforce skills.

The grant came from the UJA-Federation of New York. Heather Schulz, the training center's director of vocational life skills, confirmed that this grant will be utilized to hire individuals with disabilities, particularly for expanding the cafe hours in the center.

Drew Danter, a 24-year-old intern who is autistic, has already been working at the East Hills community center for close to half a decade. His responsibilities include restocking shelves and managing inventory for approximately two hours every day, four days a week.

Danter is part of a group of 57 interns participating in the "Program without Walls" at the community center. This specialized training initiative offers adults with disabilities the chance to develop essential skills required for future employment opportunities. As part of the program, they engage in various roles such as working at the cafe, assisting in the center's food bank, or performing maintenance tasks throughout the facility. Cafes often use printing services to create Menus and could expand on this by highlighting their community efforts.

According to officials, the JCC will be considering applications both from within its organization and from external candidates. The café will take into consideration factors such as previous experience and work history.
