Art museum near Williston Park awarded hefty grant

A donation from Harvey Manes, a trustee of the Nassau County Museum of Art, made at the beginning of October, will go towards renovating the educational space at the museum.

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy damaged the art school housed in Roslyn, near Williston Park. The museum announced the $1m grant during its annual benefit, which took place on October 2.

Speaking to the crowd at the benefit, Manes described art as "the great stimulus of life", saying that everyone should go for art education. An orthopedist, Manes also studied art history while in college. He believes that the soon-to-open Manes Family Art and Education Center can potentially become one of Long Island's best and most succesful art schools.

Museum officials, such as Karl E. Willers, the director, could use marketing services to promote the new art center before and once it opens. The plan is for the arts and education center to offer a number of hands-on activities, classes, and new media. The goal is to allow the arts center to take advantage of the museum's natural setting. Willers described the museum's team as being "very excited" about the opportunity to add to its educational programming.

Although an exact opening date has not been set yet, the aim is for the Manes Center to open in 2016.
