Syosset area winter nature walk to visit local seals
Each winter, Long Island beaches welcome the return of their resident seal population, and a Syosset area walk will visit them in their natural habitat.
The Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center provides the public with a variety of natural learning and other activities, and one of its offerings will introduce the gray seals that bask on the sand. The outing is suitable for those age three and up, and anyone who would like to participate will need to submit a registration request.
The group will be introduced to the ecology of gray seals, including their diet, how they live, and where they go to have their young. They will have an opportunity to observe them in the wild, and with some luck, they may even be able to spot some harbor seals and other marine wildlife as well.
As seals tend to populate the waters off Long Island in the winter, there are only a limited number of dates on which this walk takes place. By offering the attendees event notebooks and promotional pens, it will be easy for them to make and field notes they wish to record.
These visits to a local beach will be on offer on weekends throughout the month of January. Registrants will meet up at, and depart from, the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center in Long Island.
