What's Happening in Syosset, NY…

Syosset area troupe dances for charity

Residents of Syosset will get to enjoy a real melting pot of performance when The Mudra Foundation takes to the state at the Maguire Theater on June 24.

The troupe's performance will be based on the concept of "Navarasa," which comes from the Natye Shastra, an ancient Hindu text. The literal translation of "Navarasa" is "nine flavors." In the Mudra Foundation's interpretation, it will mean incorporating dance styles ranging from ballet to flamenco and from Japanese Okinawa to Bharatanatyam.

Another key component of Navarasa is emotion. Nine common human emotions or feelings, including joy, love, anger, compassion, fear, disgust, wonder, peace and courage, will be part of the dances.

Arti Datta, the founder of the Mudra Foundation, told that Syosset-Jericho Tribune that people:
"never get to see all these wonderful, but different, styles of dance all in one place. The night will take on a true melting pot feel.”

Dance companies who want to reach new audiences or reconnect with previous patrons can use poster printing to spread the word of their performances around their hometown. In the case of The Mudra Foundation, the organization has something else to promote. Since its founding, the group has used its performances as a way to raise funding for charitable groups.

This year, 100 percent of the proceeds from the performance will go to the Guide Dog Foundation, an organization that trains service dogs and pairs them with people in need.

The performance begin at 5pm. Information about tickets can be found on the Mudra Foundation's website.
