Syosset area to spring into gardening session

Getting growing is about to be a lot easier for those who call Syosset home, thanks to an upcoming local event.

Paul Levine, who is an experienced gardener of both vegetables and ornamental plants, will be sharing his expertise during a workshop focused on spring planting. Both Oyster Bay-East Norwich (OBEN) Library card holders and the general public are welcome, and library members will be offered an opportunity to sign up ahead of the crowd.

Levine will introduce a variety of topics that may be of interest to area gardeners. He will discuss the care of flowering bulbs such as tulips and hyacinths. Geraniums will be on the agenda as well, as will early veggies such as lettuce and broccoli. Lighting, watering, and other cultural concerns will be reviewed, and container growing will round out the presentation. To thank the attendees for participating, there will be a draw, and some of the participants will go home with a new plant.

Gardening is an activity that encourages people of all ages to keep active, and an introductory workshop is one way to help them get started. Horticultural “cheat sheets” of tips and advice may be prepared to distribute to a group by a local flyer printing company.

This chance to discover how to get a jump start on the spring horticultural season will be taking place at 89 Main Street in Oyster Bay on April 6. It will begin at 9:00 am.
