Students near Syosset prep for robot victory

After facing defeat in the First Lego League Championships last year, the RoboFalcons team from Jericho Middle School near Syosset is trying again this year.

The six-student team has been working hard to create a robot that they hope will bring them the top prize in the competition. This year will be the third year that the team has competed, but only two of the students remain from last year's team.

Rohit Bhatia, who put the team together and serves as its head coach, told the Syosset-Jericho Tribune:

"It’s not just about robotics. It's a great program for kids to learn how to construct projects while teach them to work as a team together."

Since the club is not officially recognized by the middle school, it is truly a volunteer effort on the part of the students and their coach. The students involved are motivated and excited to work on the project, according to Bhatia. Similar clubs can use flyer printing to get more students to participate and to get recognition and support from their school.

The goal of the annual First Lego League Championships is to encourage students to use technology, math, and science to find solutions to common real-world problems.

The theme for this year's contest is ‘Animal Allies’. The first qualifying competition is January 28, and the championship round will be held March 5.
