What's Happening in Syosset, NY…

Recycling pickup changes for Syosset area

As the new year gets underway, the residents of Syosset and other villages in the town of Oyster Bay will have to pay close attention to the materials they put in their recycling bins.

The town of Oyster Bay has signed a new contract for recycling collection. With the new contract, the town is responsible for paying nearly $70 per ton. In the past, the recycling collection company paid the town more than $25 per ton for collection.

Along with changing contracts and recycling companies, the town's recycling program will see another significant change for 2019, in that glass and dirty cardboard will no longer be collected.

Towns that are undergoing considerable changes to their municipal services can use printing services to let residents know what the changes are and to help them understand how they will affect them. Oyster Bay has created an illustration detailing exactly what can and cannot be put into recycling bins.

The town was forced to change its recycling collection provider after the company it had a contract with, Winters Brothers Hauling, decided to break the contract at the end of 2018. Winters Brothers Hauling had been affected by the Chinese government decision to limit the amount of recyclable material it accepts.

Oyster Bay and Syosset residents will continue to enjoy weekly recycling pickup. Along with leaving glass and paper products contaminated with food out of their bins, residents are asked to sort clean paper products into a separate container.
