What's Happening in Syosset, NY…

Program at Syosset elementary school ties together literacy, music, and technology

Every year, Robbins Lane Elementary in Syosset hosts a special Parents as Reading Partners program, sponsored by the National PTA, and this year’s theme was ‘Rock of Pages’.

The two-week program encourages students to read daily and gives prizes to individual students and classrooms who read the most. Prizes include pencils with musical notes and iTunes gift cards.

To introduce the program, which has a different theme every year, the school invited a songwriter, composer, and singer, Brent Daniels, to lead a special assembly. During the assembly, Daniels taught students that they could write their own songs, and that reading and using technology would help them do so.

One of the areas on which the program focuses is getting parents to spend time reading to or with their children at home. The school could use flyers to let parents know about the Parents as Read Partners program and to advise them on what they can do to get their children reading.

The school wrapped up the program at the beginning of March, when a final celebration was held in the school's gym. It featured a PJ party, a DJ, and snacks such as cookies and milk. For fun, there was a selfie booth that had a rock and roll-themed background, as well as a number of novelties to do with music.
