Physical competition within arms reach
An old-fashioned contest of strength will gain an event more competitive streak this weekend, when the 35th annual Long Island Arm Wrestling Championships take place.
Sponsored by Quantum Wellness Healing Center and Spa in Syosset, the competition will be held at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale.
This year's contest has 23 weight classes for both left-handed and right-handed people. There are three women's classes, plus two categories for men over the ages of 45 and 55.
The sponsors of the contest could use printing services to spread the word and get more people to sign up. The cost to compete is $20 for amateurs and men in the 45 and over categories. Professionals need to pay $25, while the fee for women is $10. Overall winners in the men's categories will receive $100 prizes. Female contestants are eligible for most valuable player awards, but no cash prizes.
Tickets to the competition itself are $12 for general admission. Both spectators and competitors need to purchase general admission tickets, on top of the competition fee.
It all takes place this Saturday, July 14, and those who win are eligible to attend the Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Champions in the fall. The championship will bring together winners from all five boroughs of New York City, as well as from upstate and Long Island.
