Newsweek names Syosset school among best in the country

As students and teachers across the US get ready to head back to school, Newsweek magazine has released its annual list of the top 500 high schools in the country, and New Yorkers have reason to be proud.

Many schools in New York State made the list. Of the 56 New York schools on this year's list, 12 made it to the top 100. Among the schools in the top 500 was Syosset High School, which ranked at 118.

Schools that made Newsweek's list can use banners to highlight their honor and to let current and potential students and staff know about the ranking.

The overall goal of the top schools list is to evaluate which high schools best prepare students for college and beyond. Newsweek used a variety of criteria to rank schools on its list. The magazine obtained data and statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics concerning how schools performed on state standardized tests. It also examined the number students who took the either the SAT or the ACT at each school, what the average SAT or ACT score was per school, and how many students at a school took at least one advanced placement class.

Other details that determined a school's ranking included its graduation rate, college enrollment rat, and demographic information. Syosset High School has a graduation rate of 99.3% and 97.6% of students are college bound. The school's average SAT score is 1766 and average ACT score is 27.
