Library near Syosset expands teen section

For a local library, a surge in the number of teenage users means that more and more high and middle school students are making use of the library's numerous resources.

In response to an influx of teenagers last spring, the Jericho Public Library, near Syosset, decided to enlarge the size of its teenage section, dubbed ‘Teen Scene’. The recent renovation increased the size of the area by two-thirds.

The idea for the renovation and expansion of Teen Scene came about last spring. During finals, many teenagers visited the library for research and study. Due to space constraints, the teens often moved furniture and "were encroaching on the adults", as library director Christina Brenner told the Syosset-Jericho Tribune.

Libraries that want to renovate or expand can use newsletter printing to keep patrons up-to-date about the projects and progress.

In the case of the Jericho Public Library, the renovation took about a month and the library aimed to have it be as inconspicuous as possible. During the update, the Teen Scene gained 12 seats (up to 18 from 6) and two computers (up to eight from six). The library also added an expanding table, so that more space and seats can be added as needed.

Gina Patronaggio, the teen's section reference librarian, told the Syosset-Jericho Tribune that she is looking forward to being able to offer more space for study and community service opportunities to teens.
