Red Hook, New York, is allegedly named for the red foliage on the trees near the Hudson River. The small town has several interesting aspects. It gives its name to the Red Hook Society for the Apprehension and Detention of Horse Thieves, which is the oldest such organization in the nation, formed in 1796. It has never caught a thief, but remains active to this day. Red Hook is also the location of Bard College, which was established in 1860. A private, liberal arts institution, Bard College comprises a conservatory and liberal arts college, along with eight graduate programs that grant more than 20 graduate degrees. Both organizations could honor special members with custom awards.
