Massapequa Park sports event to help troops

The John J. Burns Park in Massapequa Park will hold an event in July to benefit multiple charities.

Shootout for Soldiers Long Island is a sports activity where people can play lacrosse to help raise money for charities and programs that benefit soldiers. The games are not competitive and are used to improve engagement between veterans and the community. Teams of all ages are invited to play in the event. Players can choose to be part of the Stars or Stripes group when registering for the activity.

A few of the charity partners for the fundraiser include the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund and the Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund. The Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund is a group that awards scholarships to students in honor of Joe Theinert. The group also created the Strongpoint Theinert Ranch to provide therapeutic programs to veterans. The Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund is an organization that provides financial support to soldiers and their loved ones.

The shootout will be held on Thursday, July 13 for 24 hours. Teams can pay $100 to register for the event. Those interested in volunteering at the program must be at least 16. People who volunteer during the fundraiser can help keep score, operate the raffle table, and set up the shootout.
