Police officers with the Nassau County Police Department recently held a Veterans Day Food Drive at the Stop and Shop in Massapequa. The Shop-Rite in Plainview and the King Kullen in Rockville Centre also participated in the food drive.
According to Detective Chris Milori, the Department was collecting canned goods, nonperishable items, fresh produce, and frozen turkeys so veterans and their immediate families could have a special meal during the holiday season.
This food drive is part of the HOPE Program for Veterans of Island Harvest that provides food and supplies for veterans in need. Island Harvest will be working with the Police Department to ensure that that the donated food items are distributed to veterans in Massapequa Park and other local areas.
Island Harvest is continuing its food drive for the holiday season through December 24. It is accepting nonperishable food items at any Panera Bread, Rosalyn Bank, McDonalds, or locations of Bristal Assisted Living. Those who are unsure of what to donate can purchase a prepackaged box of holiday trimmings at their local Stop and Shop that will be donated right at the store. Monetary donations will also be accepted.
Island Harvest might want to work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for this year’s food drive so as to encourage more people to help out during the holiday season.
