Halloween haunt helps the hungry

The Halloween spirit is in the air as the Cemetery of Lost Souls sets up its spooky haunt later this month in Massapequa Park.

The Cemetery of the Lost Souls got its start in 2008 with some decorations for the children. The next year, a toe-pincher coffin was added, as well as some lights, smoke, and store-bought decorations. In 2010 and 2011, more props were added and they went all out to make the list of Halloween Home Haunters of Long Island, an organization that has a list of the best home haunts on Long Island.

In 2012, four columns and a laser vortex were added, as well as some displays and movies. Last year, proceeds of the haunt were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

For this year, the Cemetery of Lost Souls will be donating to a local charity, Long Island Cares. The mission of Long Island Cares is to help those who are hungry on Long Island and provide food when and where it is needed. They also sponsor programs to educate people on Long island about the causes and consequences of hunger, and help to promote self-sufficiency for those whom it helps.

The Cemetery of Lost Souls will be open on October 24, 25, and 31 beginning at 7:30 pm. Flyer printing is one way to spread the word about the haunt and the cause it is supporting.
