The Lockhart Elementary School, located in the Massapequa and adjacent Massapequa Park school districts, recently raised more than $4,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
These funds were used to purchase a backyard experience that included a swing set, waterslide and climbing wall for a five-year-old boy with leukemia.
This fundraiser is an annual and longstanding tradition at the school, having started 26 years ago. Donald Bresnihan, a sixth grade teacher, organizes a walk-a-thon starting in the fall in which funds are raised by the students. They ask friends and family to pledge a certain amount of money for each time they walk around the athletic field of the school.
Once all the money has been tallied, the school creates a large cardboard check, made out to the foundation. There is a special assembly after the school’s holiday concert, during which the check is presented to the regional CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Pat Clemency, by the Student Council.
At the assembly, Clemency spoke about how little moments of kindness are very important for children with challenging diseases, and thanked the school for the way the fundraiser has made a great difference the lives of others.
