The inaugural DogFest Walk ‘n Roll was recently held in Massapequa Park at Marjorie Post Park, where humans and canines came to raise money for Canine Companions for Independence.
According to Yvonne Dagger, organizer of the event, this fundraiser is held in 22 cities around the country and raises money for Canine Companions for Independence, which is a not-for-profit organization that provides dogs trained in assisting being with disabilities at no charge. The dogs can help people who are hard of hearing, as well as children and adults with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities.
To put the money needed in perspective, she added that $50,000 is needed to train one dog and only 40% of those dogs that enter the program are successful.
In addition to the walk, there were vendors, gift baskets, B103 radio, Peter Mazio and the Hit Squad band and Jay Fiedler as master of ceremonies, who was a quarterback at one time for New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins. Fiedler commented that he was happy to be part of the event as he is impressed by the work of the organization.
