The historic village at Allaire will be having its annual 19th Century Fall Harvest Festival next month.
The event is held as close to the Harvest Moon as possible, which is when the full moon is the closest to the autumnal equinox. The Ashbury Press ranked last year’s festival as New Jersey Shore’s number one 'must see' event.
The morning’s activities will include blacksmithing, militia and hearth-cooking demonstrations, and house tours. Music and dancing demos will be given throughout the day. Mr. Allaire’s house will be open for tours during the midday hours. There will also be apple cider pressing and apple snaps during the day. From noon on, there will be horse and wagon rides.
Children’s games will be going on all through the day, as will town ball, which is a precursor to baseball. It is a bat-and-ball game similar to rounders where a ball is thrown to a batter. If the batter hits the ball, he runs to a predesignated number of safe-havens or bases. If done successfully, his side gets a score. Types of balls, number of bases, and shapes of bats are different from town to town. Manalapan children in period costumes playing these games would make interesting subjects for Stationery printing.
