Snow no barrier to Hicksville winter celebration

Hicksville held its annual WinterFest on February 11, and the day was a success once again.

Despite heavy snow, hundreds of people went to Hicksville's Levittown Hall where they could have pictures taken with Princess Ariel, have their faces painted, participate in raffles, and admire model trains.

The event was also a great way for people to meet their neighbors. One family, the Pietropaolos, said to Newsday.com that they were able to chat with people they had seen around their neighborhood, but never spoken to. Lisa Pietropaolo waited with her daughter Mia to get the girl's face painted, and said her daughter hadn't picked a particular design; she was just excited to take part. Meawhile, Michelle Giusto and her daughter Maria did a little of everything at the event, which was the first time they had been to WinterFest, while other families said it had become a tradition.

Perhaps the favorite attraction was a model train set operated by the Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers, a group based in Levittown. Its president, Rob Trnka, said children got in line to push the buttons that worked the lights and steam on the toy train.

Trnka, who is a grandfather, said he thinks the train appeals to people because it keeps children active, and they probably had energy to burn off after they were stuck inside because of the snowstorm.
