A historic mural that was once mounted on the wall of a Sears store in Hicksville has been saved, and remounted at the Hicksville Athletic Center, much to the satisfaction of the community.
G. Hunter Jones, an artist based in Manhattan, created the mural. It was one of a series he did for Sears stores throughout the nation. Each one was personalized to the location it depicted. The Hicksville mural depicted Long Island scenes, as well as several prominent Long Islanders, and was installed in the store in the 1960s. Early this year, Sears announced it was closing the store, causing concern in the community over the mural’s fate.
The former Sears is now owned by Seritage Growth Properties, a real estate investment trust. Seritage joined the Town of Oyster Bay, and together, they paid for the removal of the mural, and its subsequent restoration and reinstallation at the athletic center. The project cost was $30,000.
This is only one of a number of murals Seritage has preserved, but the Long Island art was particularly important because it includes such famous icons as Walt Whitman and President Theodore Roosevelt among its subjects.
Materials Conservation, based in Philadelphia, carried out the project. Companies such as this could distribute Business Cards to members of the community where they undertake such work, and who might need their services in the future. Get a Free Quote for Business Cards
