Adding a third track to a 10-mile section of the Long Island Rail Road’s right-of-way could bring as much as $5.6bn to the region, according to Dave Kapell, who is co-chairman of the Right Track for Long Island Coalition.
Kapell met with the Long Island Regional Planning Council on that date to discuss the proposal to add the third track.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is a long-time supporter of the project. Addressing a group of business professionals in January, Cuomo said that adding the new track will increase the number of trains on the system, and that in turn will boost the economy of Long Island. If there are more trains available, more drivers would use them, which in turn would ease some of the congestion on the island’s roads.
The Long Island Rail Road is the busiest commuter railroad in the nation, and comes under the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is under the governor’s control. Cuomo said there will be several million dollars spent to begin the process. The proposed third track would run between Hicksville and Floral Park.
Supporters of this project might like to create Brochures for residents along the right-of-way, explaining the benefits of riding trains as opposed to driving. They could include renderings of the equipment that will run on the system.
