New NYC-LI seaplane service set to fly

Several carriers are considering flying between New York City and Long Island, beginning this summer.

The 20-minute flights would operate between Manhattan, where there’s a seaplane airport, to six new destinations including Glen Cove and Oyster Bay, two miles from Hicksville. Planes already fly between the city and the Hamptons, but the new routes would be shorter, and provide an alternative to driving, or riding the Long Island Rail Road.

OpenAirplane, Inc., based in Chicago, says the cost of the service - $385 each way - is likely to mean the flights would only go into operation if substantial demand develops. In addition, there are no guarantees that the carriers can develop regular flight schedules. The aircraft seat eight, and if there are too few passengers to justify the trip, the flight could be canceled.

Still, two carriers, Lima NY Corporation of White Plains and Tailwind Air Service LLC from West Harrison, have agreed to develop new routes for commuters. Peter Manice of Tailwind, which already flies to the Hamptons, says there are people who live on the island, have the money to pay for the flights, and would like to shorten their commute. Service could start some time during June 2017.
