Mountain bikers return to Hicksville area

Riders who like mountain bikes have an upcoming race to look forward to.

The Bicycle Planet MACHO race, now in its second year, will offer riders a choice of three courses—and a chance to participate in the only sanctioned bicycle race in Nassau County. The event is open to all riders no matter their age or skill level.

The man behind the race is Corey Roberts, who has been instrumental in bringing cycling to Long Island. Roberts, along with Stacy, his wife, produce over 15 races per year, a number that includes four on Long Island. Roberts lives in Baldwin, and has always wanted to produce a race near home.

The upcoming event has been developed with the help of the Nassau County Parks Department, and that of CLIMB, a nonprofit organization. CLIMB stands for Concerned Long Island Mountain Bicyclists, and, like Roberts, group members are dedicated to increasing awareness of mountain biking on the island.

The MACHO race is set for this Saturday, May 14, in Woodbury, about five miles from Hicksville, in the Stillwell Woods Preserve. Course details will be kept secret until race day, but organizers emphasize that they will make sure the courses pose no threat to the environment or to the riders.

Organizers could create fun Banners, which work well outdoors, to add color to the race.
