Icy dive to attract the brave and foolish

Hicksville residents who want to help Special Olympics athletes—and who can stand the cold—might consider joining their friends in Oyster Bay for a dip into the frigid waters off Tobay Beach.

The bay, which is less than two miles from Hicksville, is holding its second plunge, called ‘Freezin’ for a Reason’.

John Venditto, Town Supervisor of Oyster Bay, humorously suggested that the plunge will allow residents to begin their beach visits early in the season, as well as raising money for a good cause. These ‘Polar Plunges’, as they are called, are held throughout the country each year, and attract thousands of people. The Oyster Bay plunge will raise funds for Special Olympics New York, as well as promoting awareness about people who live with intellectual disabilities.

The plunge will help to provide sports competition and training year-round in more than 22 Olympic-type sports to over 65,000 people with intellectual disabilities who live in New York. The training is free to them and their families.

Participants who are willing to freeze for a good cause can do so this Saturday, March 21, at Tobay Beach. Registration begins at 9:30 am, two hours before the plunge itself.

Plunge organizers could work with a banner printing company to something to use at the event. Banners are sturdy and work particularly well outdoors.
