Hicksville parking alternatives receive positive feedback

The Long Island Rail Road parking garage in Hicksville closed recently for repairs, but the Town of Oyster Bay is running shuttle buses to outlying parking lots, and the effort seems to be going smoothly, according to an article in Newsday.com.

The town has made parking available at a closed Sears store located about a half-mile from the station. Residents who have parking permits can ride shuttle buses from the lot to the LIRR station while the garage is under repair, a project that is expected to take three months. Officials who are setting up services such as this could work with a banner printing company to mark loading zones for riders.

One area resident, Mindy Jackson, described the park/ride as “pretty painless,” adding it might be a better solution for her than “driving around trying to get a spot.” Knowing there is space available at Sears helps take the stress out of the parking situation. Another local, Brian Kessler said he got up 10 minutes earlier than usual so he could figure out the new system, and was pleased with the way the town was handling the situation.

The town is using buses of two different sizes as shuttles: 20-passenger buses and 44-passenger buses. Those leaving at 6:00 am had only a few riders, but by 7:00 am, many were full.
