Last week, the New York State Senate enacted a bill that would rename a Hicksville street after Billy Joel, who was born in the Bronx but raised in the hamlet.
According to a recent news article, Route 107, which is between Lenox Avenue and the Northern State Parkway, will soon become Billy Joel Boulevard to the reported delight of Hicksville residents.
Tim Dooley, a Hicksville local, said that he thought it was nice that the singer will get a street named for him, as Joel is considered a “big part of Long Island”. State Senator Jack Martins apparently agrees, since he helped to sponsor the bill, noting that Joel's charitable acts, as well as his songs, have done a lot of good.
Martins also said that although the musician is world famous, he remains a true Long Islander who never forgot his roots, and who continues to aid Long Island and his fellow islanders.
Michael Montesano, who was also one of the bill's sponsors, said that many community members had approached officials asking that Route 107 be renamed in Joel's honor. Montesano added that despite the performer's long and successful career, he is still very approachable and grounded, and contributes repeatedly to the welfare of the area.
Hicksville officials could work with a banner printing company to create a colorful sign to hang over the street when it is renamed.
