Hicksville locals have new eatery to Peru-se

Peruvian restaurants are growing in popularity in and around Hicksville, New York, with four now operating there, including Jalea Peruvian Cuisine, which just opened its doors.

Jalea is in Hicksville on Old Country Road, while Mineola boasts Las Viñas, and The Inkan is offering its treats to residents of Garden City Park. La Candela Bistro is also in Hicksville.

Jalea has taken over the former La Parvita Bakery & Restaurant. It has both a cheerful dining room and a large bar, though its liquor license is still pending. The menu features traditional Peruvian dishes that focus on potatoes, meat, and seafood.

Diners will find appetizers such as beef heart and fish fritters on the menu, along with ceviches made from raw fish. Jalea also serves rotisserie chicken whole, and tacu tacu (steak, rice, and beans). The kitchen makes two versions of chupe, which is a popular potato-corn chowder.

Jalea, from which the restaurant takes its name, is another typical Peruvian dish. It is a platter of fried mixed seafood atop fried yucca, topped with the spicy onion relish known as ‘zarza criolla’.

Restaurants like this can benefit by working with a flyer printing company, which can create a handout for distribution near the location. If coupons giving diners a special discount are included on the handout, it could bring in customers who might not otherwise try the cuisine.
