Hicksville garage to be repaired

The Hicksville garage, located near the Long Island Rail Road station, offers 1,441 parking spaces, but has had problems since it opened in 2011. Cracks, water leaks, and falling concrete have made using it problematic, so repairs have been scheduled. The price tag for the repairs is $13.9 million. The original construction cost approximately $65 million, which included demolishing the garage that previously stood on the site.

In June, the Oyster Bay Town Board rejected bids to repair the structure. The three that were received were judged too high, as they came in several million dollars above what town engineers said repairs should cost. After rejecting the first round, the board issued a second request for bids, and has now awarded the contract.

Pullman SST Inc., based in Swedesboro, New Jersey, won the bid and will handle the project. According to a resolution issued by the town board, the construction should take 159 calendar days. During that time, according to Brian Nevin, a town spokesman, the structure will close for 90 days. He added that the town will provide a schedule of the closure and alternative plans for transportation and parking soon. Earlier in the year, official warned the garage would be shut down in order to allow repairs to be made.

Officials dealing with situations like this can use poster printing to keep residents informed of scheduling changes.
